World Disasters Report 2009 - Focus on early warning, early action

Source(s): International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC)

Published by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), this report argues that early warning without early action is not enough; early action can do more to reduce loss of life and protect livelihoods than can be achieved through emergency response alone. National governments, donors and all stakeholders must take up this challenge.

Supporting Resilient Post-earthquake recovery in China

Source(s): GFDRR Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery

This document highlights resilient post-earthquake recovery in China. Past experience has shown that the goal is not only to restore basic services and living conditions in an incrementally improved way, but rather that it is necessary to strategically embed the reconstruction efforts into the overall development strategy of the area; ensuring that after reconstruction is complete, economic development in the earthquake affected areas is sustainable and surpasses predisaster levels. Accordingly, reconstruction does not only restore services, but is laying the foundation in appropriate locations, for sound, sustainable social and economic development
