Tidal wave / Tsunami

Tsunamis are sometimes called tidal waves, though they have nothing to do with tides. Tsunamis can be caused by earthquakes or landslides under the sea. The wave generated can travel across an ocean at over 800kp/h. When it approaches shallow coastal waters it slows and grows in height. On striking land the tsunami may cause massive destruction along the coastal region.

World Disasters Report 2009 - Focus on early warning, early action

Source(s): International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC)

Published by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), this report argues that early warning without early action is not enough; early action can do more to reduce loss of life and protect livelihoods than can be achieved through emergency response alone. National governments, donors and all stakeholders must take up this challenge.
