Volcanic eruption

A volcano is a mountain or hill with an opening in the earth’s crust through which molten lava, ash and gases are ejected from below the earth’s surface. Volcanic eruptions are very rare but if they happen they can cause severe damage to the surrounding area, with lava flows, harmful gases and clouds of ash. Winds can carry these clouds of ash across thousands of square miles, turning day to night across vast areas.

World Disasters Report 2009 - Focus on early warning, early action

Source(s): International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC)

Published by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), this report argues that early warning without early action is not enough; early action can do more to reduce loss of life and protect livelihoods than can be achieved through emergency response alone. National governments, donors and all stakeholders must take up this challenge.
